How Often Should You Get Your Car Detailed?
There is no single right schedule. Use these practical guidelines based on how you actually use your car.

It depends on how you use your car
A garaged weekend car and a daily commuter with two dogs need very different schedules. Instead of one rule, use the situations below.
A simple starting point
- Full detail (inside and out): a few times a year is a reasonable goal for most drivers.
- Exterior wash: every couple of weeks, more often in winter when road salt is around.
- Paint polishing: only when swirls and haze bother you — polishing removes clear coat, so it should not be done often.
Detail more often if…
You have pets or kids
Hair, crumbs and spills build up fast. Regular interior cleaning keeps them from setting in. See Pet Hair Removal.
You park outside
Tree sap, pollen and bird droppings can etch paint if left too long. Richmond's spring pollen season is a good time for an exterior detail.
You drive a lot in winter
Road salt and brine cling to the lower body and wheels.
Signs it is time
- Visible stains or a lingering smell inside
- Paint feels rough after washing
- Water no longer beads on the paint
- You are about to sell or trade in the car
